History of Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford
Architecture of the Sheldonian Theatre
This beautiful building was designed by Sir Christopher Wren, who was a Professor of Astronomy at Oxford and was built between 1664 and 1669. The design was based on a Roman D-shaped theatre, these theatres were normally open to the sky but given the weather in the UK, Wren designed a magnificent roof that spanned 21 metres over the top of the building, without the need for columns to support it. The theatre was named after one of its benefactors, Gilbert Sheldon who was a chancellor at Oxford University and also Archbishop of Canterberry.

The entrance to the Sheldonian is next to the Divinity School where students put on their robes before they enter the Theatre. The back of the Theatre, which fronts onto Broadstreet in Oxford and is surrounded by a line of stone heads is another nod to Roman theatre. This is the 3rd set of heads to adorn the pillars as the first 2 sets fell foul of time and the weather.
